Render Unto Caesar

Episode Summary

Matthew 22:15-22 These words also challenge those who use religion to protect political power. Jesus’ opponents attempt to force him into a choice between religious faithfulness and political compliance. Instead, Jesus distinguishes what belongs to Caesar from what belongs to God. Money may circulate through political and economic systems, but that money has moral implications. Human dignity cannot be reduced to a political or economic possession. Governments may claim jurisdiction over territory and taxation, but they cannot legitimately claim ownership of people. To give Caesar what belongs to Caesar is therefore not necessarily to give Caesar everything Caesar wants. And to give God what belongs to God means recognizing that every human being bears God's image. Any political system that forgets this places itself above the very people it is supposed to serve. We must not surrender our conscience, dignity, compassion, or commitment to justice to Caesar. Governments may demand taxes, obedience, or allegiance, but the image of God is stamped upon every human being more deeply than any political authority can impose its own image upon a coin.
